I get a few
emails now and again as to why I don’t stock John Masters Organics. Or Juice
Beauty. Or Ren. Or any of the other hundreds of natural and organic skin and
beauty brands found around the globe. My answer is simple.
I am
concerned, not only with the products that we put on our skin, but with the
toxins we put into our environment, which, ultimately, affect our health
anyway. It seems a little bit counteractive to me to worry about putting
ceteareth 20 on my skin when the product itself has belched tonnes of greenhouse gas into our atmosphere being
imported from, say, Germany.
The
Australian natural and organic skin care industry is, compared to the UK and
the US, growing, but not booming. Funnily enough our brands are coveted overseas
(because, well, they are simply fantastic), but Australian brands tend not to
get that much Australian support! Funny that.
Many of our
brands also aim to source their ingredients from Australia as well, and
considering we are living in one of the largest countries in the world with an
incredibly diverse climate I think it makes great sense. It isn’t always
possible, but as the industry grows and gets more support, it is gets easier
and easier to push for an even more environmentally / health friendly product.
Many
foreign brands are wonderful, there is no doubt, and I am extremely happy that
the industry is picking up speed across the globe. But like I said it is also
an environmental issue for Bare Naked Beauty, and that is why we choose
Australian.
Besides, we
Aussie’s are in a unique situation. We are a hugely diverse, multi-cultural
nation with a large Caucasian population. Living is a country that really isn’t
suited to northern European skin types (just look at our rates of skin
cancer!). Australian producers understand this, and their products are designed
specifically for our needs. And you can really tell that in the results. Ask
yourself, who would you get to design you a bikini: a coat-maker or a
bikini-designer? Exactly! (A weird analogy but you get my point).
So, there
you go. Buying Australian is a more environmental, healthful, and economically
responsible choice. It’s better for our pocket; it’s better for animals, for
the planet, for our health and for our skin. And that is why Bare Naked Beauty
loves Australian brands.
